i'm a nerd...
in typical 'cynthia nerdy fashion' - i find myself being consumed by this guitar thing . (sigh...I can never seem to *do something* without throwing everything i got into it...it would be nice to be a little more casual about it. but i guess that's what makes me - me....)
I had no idea that this guitar thing would be right up my alley. I always figured it was the artsy, creative types that got into this - which i'm not that type of person. So I'm surprised how much i like it.
I've been practicing at least 2 hours a day and have to force myself to stop and not stay up too late. I know myself well enough to know this is gonna stick. It's been about 3 weeks now and I recognize the signs of addiction. ;)
Last night I spent 45(!) minutes practicing the Pentatonic scale over and over and over again - trying to get in a rhythm and get it perfect. A good thing i live alone as I would probably be driving someone crazy. ;)

- it's technical - I *love* learning and excelling at technical sports/activities. The brute force types of activities don't appeal to me - I am drawn to things that take finesse and good technique(ice speedskating, pool, technical terrain on the bike, etc). Now I'm sure the better you get the more creative side of people comes out - but I imagine I will always be a technique oriented player.
- you have to be precise - if your finger is just a tiny bit on a wrong string, or your aren't close enough to the fret or you aren't holding down the string just right or you are strumming too hard, etc - boy do you know it
- instant gratification - if you get it right you *immediately* know it and if you get it wrong you *immediately* know it
- possibilities are endless! - there are so many types of music - one person can never master all the genres.
- the repetition of it all - i'm a total nerd and can practice scales and drills all day long. ad nauseam. That's what made me such a good pool player - I would work on the same drill for hours on end.

There are mathematical (left-brain) aspects to music theory -- the consistent intervals of major and minor scales, etc.
I stopped playing the flute about 12 years ago (when I finished college and entered the working world....it's yet another thing I never have time for). Reading your blog makes me think about putting acoustical material in a corner of my basement so I can practice things like scales and tone exercises ad nauseum -- without my neighbors getting nauseous. ;-)
