I miss pancakes..eating Paleoesque/Metabolic Efficiency style 1 month later...

It's been a month since Dave and I have gone to a Paleoesque way of eating.   The biggest concession for me is not eating pancakes.   I love me some pancakes.

A few weeks ago, I made plans with Terzah for an early lunch at Snooze.  So today was the day I was going to splurge.   Luckily, Terzah likes pancakes too and helped me eat the "coffee and donuts" pancake...so I didn't have much of a sugar crash later in the day.

Friends, good conversation and pancakes - it was a GOOD day.  :)

My diet isn't truly Paleo (I don't know anyone that is 100% Paleo - the people I know that say they are hardcore still drink margs & coffee and eat bacon & maple/agave syrup...things that are NOT 100% Paleo - but I'll get off my soapbox now...) but more along the lines of this book - Metabolic Efficiency.   I just say Paleo as most people know what that means.

effects of Paleoesque/Metabolic Efficiency diet so far...

1.  I feel like a eat a LOT of food but somehow the calories only add up to ~1400 per day (low for me)
2.   I am spending a LOT of time food planning, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning in order to eat this way.  (I am getting more efficient, but it's still a big effort on my part - glad I don't have any kids, pets or husband at home)
3.  I'm never hungry
4.  I am no longer bonking 3 miles into my 6mile morning run. (I don't eat before I run).  Actually, I ran 7 miles this morning and didn't take in any water/nutrition and felt fine.
5.  I lost 5 pounds without really trying.
6.  I do not miss eating potatoes or pasta (I ate a few hashbrowns today with my pancake splurge)
7.  I miss pancakes...a LOT!!!
8.  My food bill went WAY up at the beginning, but it's settled down now as I have stocked up on new things and have become more efficient in my grocery shopping
9.  I go to the trash recycling place on Monday mornings to drop off the compost of all the fruit rinds, banana peels, egg shells, etc from the massive amount of food I cook on Sundays.  I've learned to be careful where I step because I've stepped on something stinky while there and went to work smelling literally like a dump!

I spend a lot of time in the kitchen as well.  Making all my own stuff these days but it's worth it to me and how I feel.  What does your typical day of foods look like?
The hardest thing for me is cutting back on fruits, I really have no control in the summer with fruit which equals sugar for me.
Let me know if you want my coconut flour pancake recipe, I also have one with almond flour.

Life without pancakes?? Unthinkable!!!
Glad you guys had a great breakfast together!! Jealous!
Don't think I could do the paleo thing ... not enough discipline (as far as eating goes)

maybe us 3 can organize a breakfast at Snooze in Denver!   I need an excuse to eat more pancakes.

The Paleo thing is a pain - so much planning/prep - the ONLY reason i can swing it is flexible work hours, no kids or husband at home.  :)

I'd be interested in the recipe with almond flour.  I just got a BIG bag of that stuff.  Please send it.  :)

My typical day is:
breakfast: scramble egg whites w/shredded zucchini and a fruit mix of cantaloupe/grapes/pineapple
snack - 1/4 cup of mixed nuts or maybe a slice of zucchini banana bread
lunch - salad, some kind of protein (usually some kind of beef or grilled chicken) and quinoa w/broccoli mixed in it.
snack - veggies in a sprouted corn tortilla or a cup of fruit
dinner - chicken fajitas, gauc and calabasitas

I'll have a beer maybe once a week.  I am eating a fair bit of fruit.  Quinoa and sprouted tortillas are "not truly" Paleo - but the recommendation from the Metabolic Effiencieny book is a small amount of grains for athletes. (not that I really consider myself an athlete).   Also, I'll splurge now and again.  A couple of weeks ago, I had a cream filled donut (so GOOD), last week I ate cheese enchiladas(YUM)!) and then this week I ate hashbrowns and a pancake.  :)

Good to see guac in there....chips, alas, no.....I wish I had the conjones to do this, but the whole kids, husband at home thing...well, that's my excuse anyway. I am doing well with the no sugar thing. I think my cheese "problem" may be my next area of attack. :^)

Our brunch was perfect! And I'd love to go down to Denver and go to Snooze w/ Kathy. Maybe on a Friday this fall?

Oh, and stop it with the not an athlete thing. You're one of the most athletic people I know!

I cannot even fathom a life without pancakes.  I came back from my 5 miles and though - I'd like some pancakes for dinner!!

Sounds like the benefits outweigh the cons.  How is it make you feel about your overall self!?

A Fall Friday trip to Denver for pancakes and good company?  I'm in!

Yeah - I *still* have a hard time considering myself an athlete - all those memories of ALWAYS being the last kid picked for kickball teams left it's mark.  I feel like a poser!   funny how those childhood event impact our lives....sigh...if they could see me now!!! ;)

yeah - no pancakes is a bummer.  but I'm gonna try to make some with almond flour.

Overall - I feel good - I *might* be more energy stable during the day, but it could be just my imagination.   I don't feel a "night/day" difference tho -- but my diet was close to this - I just gave up grains, bread, cereal/granola, rice/pasta and potatoes.   I do miss eating a big bowl of granola every now and then for a snack...and of course pancakes.  :)

I'm so glad this is working out for you - aside from the pancake missing :).  Do you follow Lindsay's blog: Chasing the Kenyans?  She is on a paleo diet and make these coconut pancakes and my goodness if they didn't sound great!  She has the recipe on her blog.
Glad you got to meet up with Terzah - how fun! :)

i am clearly so behind on my blog reading! i really liked seeing some of things you've noticed on your paleo-ish "diet". yes, let's not get started on that soap box, haha. but regarding #1 - i know what you mean! i eat all day long and sometimes don't net more than 1200 cals. most people jump on you for not eating enough but seriously i'm never hungry.

i definitely think it's ok to splurge sometimes. i really miss pizza myself.

I am not capable of this.  I know.  I tried.  But it's not even my worst sin, so I shall go on.

But if I ate even LESS carbs instead of going full on Paleo it would help.  Meh.

pp - it's been tough, BUT I went in with the mindset that it's only temporary until Dave runs his 50 mile race.  But the funny thing is now I'm used to eating this way -  I have a medical procedure coming up in 2 days and their instructions "no fruit, vegetables or food with a lot of fiber or with seeds" and I'm at a loss of what to eat!
