the voices in my head

I rarely run with music.  I've never done a race with music.  I don't listen to the radio when I'm driving.  I like to be alone with my thoughts.

On Saturday, my training plan called for a 14 mile run.  1.5 miles SLOW, 7 miles zone 3, the remainder in zone 2 & 1.  I was out for ~2:20 - I ran alone, but I wasn't alone in my head.

I hear 2 distinct voices when I'm running - the voices of my good pals, Dana D. and Kay L.  They talk to me whenever I need them.

Dana and Kay are amazing athletes, strong and beautiful women with great pearls of wisdom.   Kay is very matter-of-fact.  She doesn't sugar coat things, but at the same time she's always upbeat.  Dana is inspiring all around - tough as nails and with a 'hang tough' attitude full of love.   Can't ask for better company during a long run, eh?
my pal Dana - back when she was cranking out ~5 minute miles

typical Kay - rocking a mtn bike trail w/a huge smile on her face.  This pic should be in a bike magazine!

Kay

I meet Kay in 2002 at the Boulder Short Track mtn bike races.  She has kicked my ass in every race I've been in with her.  There is NOTHING I can do, no matter how hard i try - she is just way stronger than me.  I do love having her as competition as she really raises the bar and shows me what is possible .  Kay, in addition to being a kick ass mtn biker,  is Boston & Pikes Peak marathon veteran.  Here are some of the things she says to me:
  • "Yep - a marathon IS hard. But you've done hard"  (when i asked her about Boston)
  • "Everyone was invited.  Not a lot of women can do that".  (when I was lamenting the low turn out in my AG for the Breck Epic)
  • "Your goal is do get the job done - don't worry about setting any speed records. (when lamenting my slowness)
My typed words don't do justice to the way she say these things.  She doesn't let me feel sorry for myself - it's all about "tighten the belt on your breeches and get the damn job done".  She always talks to me right when I need it.

Dana

Dana is one of my best pals and I met her soon after I moved to Boulder.   She is a crazy strong athlete and person.   the adventures she's been on boggle the mind.  Back in high school she was cranking out 5 minute miles - she can put the hurt on just about anybody while on her road bike and no one can beat her mental toughness.   Here are some of the things she says to me:

  • "just this interval and then one more" (i hear this everytime I have a V02 max or tempo workout)
  • "you are focused and determined" (I hear this when my will is weakening)
  • "I love that you push yourself" (when I'm questioning why I'm doing what I am doing)

I am very blessed to have these 2 girls as friends.  I literally laugh out loud when they talk to me on my runs and the spring in my step gets just a little more springy.  They make my life better and I'm grateful they come along for the ride.
