It's not what I expected....

I was racing in Summit County on Sunday so I headed up to the condo on Saturday to pre-ride the course and chill out until the race on Sunday afternoon. I invited my riding bud Tom to come up since I know how much he likes the SMC series. My friend, April, joined us too.

Now Tom is an interesting guy - smart as heck and likes to *debate* a lot. He was "unemployed" by choice for a while and has recently been working again. Turns out the head board member of Tom's company, Brad Feld, (yes - *the* Brad Feld of Mobius) was in Keystone and invited Tom and crew(me and April) to pick up sushi and have dinner with them.

Of course, I wanted to go to dinner. I was curious to see what Brad and his wife were like. I know he has been wildly successful with his companies and I see his name mentioned frequently in the Daily Camera.

Recently a friend of mine, Isabelle, introduced me to Hugh the CEO of Descente USA. He was a handsome/polished man that looked like he was comfortable with power. Smooth polished complexion/gelled hair/stylish glasses/tanned skin/stylish clothes. Very metrosexual.

My impression from the press is Brad is the most respected businessman in Boulder. So
to be honest I was expecting the same appearance as Hugh. I also expected his wife to be of the same ilk.

As I pull into their pristine driveway I think "uh oh - i hope my 11 year old Honda Civic doesn't leave an oil spot" (I forgot to look when I left)

We arrived with sushi and Brad and Amy greet us. whoa - they look like normal people. Brad has longish hair and was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. Amy was just as casually dressed as Brad. They invite us in and immediately I felt very comfortable. We sat at the kitchen counter and begain the whole "get to know each other" small talk. It seemed very comfortable and natural to me.

We moved to the dinner table and talked about a wide variety of topics - work/family/books/geeky stuff/etc. During this conversation I realized how one dimensional my personal life has become with my biking (dare i say) obsession. I realized I missed hearing stories about all kinds of different topics. Things like a funky bar/sushi restaurant in Alaska, the personal story of how they lost their dog in December, sci-fi books - what we liked and didn't like.

Then we went downstairs to play the video game "Guitar Hero". Man - I wish Dave had come up with me - he would've loved this game. I had never heard of this game before - but I'm not much on gaming. It's a cool story on how Amy met one of the developers of this game at *orchestra* camp. Plus it was a fun, different take on the video games I've been exposed to as mostly things get blown up or shot. Sounds like a cool sucess story for the original developers.

The evening ended around 10pm for us and I was smiling as I left. It was nice to have an evening with interesting down-to-earth (as Amy says) "folk".

We had a great time hanging out with y'all. I ran to Silverthorne in the morning and had pancakes at Sunshine Cafe. I'll make sure we do the Pink Pony the next time I'm in Vegas.
