out of limbo

Ok...decision made.  With the sign-up to the Platte River Half Marathon - I'm committed the next 4 months to run and then after that - it's mtn bike time(that's the plan anyway) baby!

I'm not a "new year resolution" type person so the goals I've set myself for the next 4 months don't have anything to do with the fact 2012 just started.  :)

But here is goes -

Race schedule

Running Goals-
  1. have FUN!   If i'm not having a good time and smiling then I need to be doing something else!  yeeHAW!
  2. be smart and don't get injured!  Even if that means backing off of races or time goals
  3. race a 5k at a sub-8 minute mile pace which equates to a sub 25 minute race. That would be the total of 50 seconds faster than my first 5k I did in October 2011.  A goal I feel is very doable.
    1. secret goal - race a 5k in the 'age graded' range of 70% or above.  That would mean a 24:10 minute race and a pace of 7:46 minute miles (approx 30 seconds per minute faster than my first 5k)  A time of 24:10 is the age-graded equivalent to a "young person"(aka a person half my age) running a 5k in 21:08.
  4. Run a my first ever half marathon within a sub-2 hour time frame.
To help me reach these goals I've been fortunate enough to be able to enlist help from bouldercoaching.com.   I'll be working with Darren De Reuck.    I do feel a little bit out of my league - the same way I did when Lynda Wallenfels agreed to take me on for mtn biking since both Darren and Lynda coach world level/elite athletes.

I'm stoked I have so many great resources at my disposable...I'm gonna give it my all and do my part to not squander it!

Still some Uncertainty...
here's me in my costume for the 2010 edition of 12 hours of Mesa Verde
So I figured a week of recovery  from the Platte Half Marathon and then that would give me enough time to train for the 12 hours Mesa Verde mtn bike race on May 12, 2012, right??   I'd done this race the past few years and it's been one of the highlights of the year.  Fun course and fun atmosphere.

But then after talking to my daughter-in-law (they live in NYC) I'm *thinking* about doing the Brooklyn Half Marathon on May 20th...

I wonder if that's doable - race my 1st ever half marathon on April 15th - race a 12 hour mtn bike race on May 12 and race another half (at sea-level mind you!) on May 20th.  hmm...wonder of my old body can take it??

guess we'll see how it goes!  i'm excited to see what happens in 2012.  bring it!

Wow! That is awesome! You are a machine (and you'll find out if your body can take it for sure....I bet it can).

Darren DeReuck? I'm so jealous!! You are going to be a monster by the time he finishes with you. A whole pack of his clients ran that Longmont Turkey Trot I was in--man, are they fast!

Have a great time training for the Platte River Half. I have run this race twice and I do like it. I wish you the best of luck!
