heh...i poached this pic from Andrew Hyde (CEO of SUW) from his blog post. I love pictures of Ricky - seems like a lot of them are with him sitting behind a laptop...but I digress...
The second pic is one i snagged from Ricky's flickr acct.(cool shoes, eh?)
Ricky has been participating at Startup Weekend - NYC this past weekend.
Here we @ the Walnut having breakfast. I know - I know - I like to brag about my son - but that's what Moms do, eh?
Startup Weekends I found out about SUW when they had one in Boulder. Tom, Dave and I swung by to check it out when it was in full force and as Tom wanted to touch base with Brad Feld about work stuff.
It was a Friday evening and the energy in the room was high and it looked like lots of ideas and collaboration were flowing. Of course I immediately thought of Ricky and Steve and thought how well they would fit into a group like this. The Boulder SUW came up with and launched vosnap.com (check it out).
It was such a big hit that SUW have sprung up all over the world. When I saw they were having one in NYC - I immediately called Ricky and had him sign up right then and there.
So Ricky's been working all weekend @ NYC SUW...
NYC - Startup Weekend
Last week - the first thing he did was come up with some possible T-shirt designs. Here are all his ideas. Andrew picked the 3rd one. Personally - I liked #2 and #5 the best - but what do i know - i'm just some middle-age lady. ;) (click on a logo to see it full sized)
As far as the app to be worked on this weekend - people submitted ideas for the weekend up until the Friday evening deadline.
The SUW-NYC started @ 6pm on Friday...i've been able to keep up-to-date on the happenings via the nyc.startupweekend.com website and via gmail chat with Ricky. Ricky and I have been chatting through out the weekend. Plus Ricky got his own 42second video blog post...
The idea that was voted on was "Greatest Menu Meals" with the idea being that people are usually looking for a *specific* meal and while restaurant reviews are good - just because a place has the best burger it might have a terrible Philly and Cheese. So the app would tie into Facebook and a users friends to find the "best" burger, or guac or philly steak, etc. Kinda like how NetFlix lets people see their friends movies list, movies watched, reviews and recommendations. These youngsters nowadays are aways networking with their friends.
Ricky's job was to come up with the "name" and logo. And here's what he came up with this.
.Then they were off to the races. The User Group defining requirements, the developers learning the Facebook API, the sys admins doing their thing, and the Architects and developers coding aways.
Ricky's been in his element and said he's met some great people and some awesome professional connections.
As of 8:11pm MST - the product hasn't launched as of yet.
As for me - I'm gonna sign up - as a certified (in my own mind) pancake connoisseur I'm gonna do a Pancake recommendation! ;)
Go here and sign up(please!). http://favoreats.com/

that is not my best angle!
I find it interesting that only one of the 14 participants was female...(at least according to this photo)
@bbrooke...yes that's one thing I noticed @ the Boulder SUW.
Actually the weekend started w/~80 people, ~40 on Saturday and dwindled to ~20 on Sunday. But Ricky said the 20 on Sunday were all superstars in their field.
back to your observation -this is just a reflection of the "real" world of software development.
As a female software developer I'm usually the lone female. in my immediate group there are 8 guys and me. I don't understand why women don't flock to a career in this field. This type of work is interesting, challenging, fun and usually pays fairly well.
Personally i love my job!
