geekiness abound - OOAD class
I was in an Object Oriented Analysis and Design class for the last 3 days at work.
The last class i went to for work (UML) was excruciatingly boring and i didn't learn a thing. The UML instructor kept talking about his work in the defense industry and how fast the planes they built were. I would think "dude - this doesn't have anything to do with UML - can we get back to the subject??"
My boss, kevin, signed me and my colleague, Rich, up for this class. Rich scares me because he's so smart, detailed oriented and conscientious along with a great work ethic - so i feel i don't measure up so well against him. (hmm...i'm not used to feeling insecure - it kinda sucks...)
Anyways - i wasn't sure what to expect from this class - but it turned out being a great class.
first of all the instructor, Al was outstanding. Obviously very knowledgeable about the material and he let us do a lot of hands on exercises. He had a knack for nudging you in the right direction without telling you the answer or micro-managing you. i felt like i was able to digest in info due to his teaching style.
i took a pic of Al on my phone and here he is - a true geek - but i think geeks rule so to me that's a compliment.
secondly - Al had the ability to get dialog going with the class. A lot of people brought up great points (even me on occasion) and had lively discussions. The last 3 days have flown by...
thirdly, the tools he introduced to us where things that i can use right now and are relevant to my job. I'm excited to try this process out with the EDTB project.
As suspected, Rich and another guy Richard were the "smart ones" in the class. even tho Rich scares me - i'm lucky to work with him as he's great to bounce ideas off of. In addition, he comes to me with questions from time-to-time and sometimes I'm actually able to help him too. I think it's pretty odd -that Rich and I are not only physically different (he's a guy, i'm a girl, he's tall, i'm short) and personalility wise different (he's quiet and thoughtful, i'm more outgoing and sometimes speak without thinking) - even with all these differences when we talk about our troubleshooting steps a lot of the times we have gone through the same exact thought processes/activities as the each other. it's very reasuring that i think like Rich sometimes - hmmm....maybe i'm no so bad.
