Just got back from SLC. Another great week of skating - but i'm super stoked to be home too!
Dave flew in on Friday and we skated Friday and Saturday and finally made it home after a grueling 11 hour drive home. Vail Pass was a mess @ 8pm.
anyway - dave took a little video of me and a couple of snaps. The photos/video are great as i can see i'm doing a few things right (yay!) and several things I'm not doing so well(awww) - but since I've been under Rex's program for 3 weeks total - I'm pretty stoked with the progress i've made.
Dave says "wow! you are actually skating!" uhhh...thanks I think.
I like this pic.
I'm getting really good weight transfer and I can tell i'm fixin' to land (and glide) on my left outside edge. Not getting your edges is a HUGE problem most skaters have - so I'm happy to see i'm consistently hitting them. :)
here's the video - I'm at a casual pace - probably a 50second lap for the 400 meter track. A 50 second lap is really slow - a "respectable" lap time is 34 - 36 seconds. I'll get there tho! I think i could probably do a 45 second lap (which is still slow) and maintain what technique i do have - if i tried anything faster - my technique would go down the toliet.
things I'm doing well:
1. i'm getting a good weight transfer
2. i'm consistently hitting my outside edges (this is big)
3. i'm balancing on my outside edges
4. i'm getting a good lateral movement and not raising up on my transtions
things i really need to work on:
1. i need to stay on my edges longer
2. my back is a flat as a pancake - i could've sworn i was rounding my back - but the pix don't lie
3. i'm not sitting very low - again i could've sworn my butt was almost dragging the ground - but i guess not. grrrrr
4. I'm not fully extending my legs which means hanging out on thoses edges longer
5. i'm almost standing up in the corner
They had 500meter time trails on Friday for the club skaters and it just kills me how happy people are about their race times. don't they realize how bad their technique is?? pretty much everyone we watched - their technique went to total crap in the race.
i'm such a technique snob (it's Rex's fault) but most of the club skaters have really bad technique (ie not hitting their edges, not sitting low enough, poor weight transfer, even just balancing on 1 blade, etc) BELIEVE me - i know my technique leaves much to be desired - but that's why i'm putting in the time upfront to skate slowly while getting my technique nice and solid. thanks Rex!
