everyone (and i mean everyone) suffers
We got to the Slickrock trailhead ~noon on Saturday. The winner - David Wiens came in 1st with a time of 12:45. The course record 12:41(by endurance stud/data geek extrodinare - Dave Harris) still stands. ;)
now this is the famous David Wiens that pretty much "owns" the Leadville 100. He crushes the field at the Leadville every year, with the exception of a few years ago when Philip Meashgueale(sp?) won by a few minutes. Philip was a World Cup pro and later that year he was busted for EPO. So in my book David W is still the winner that year.
Anyways - I heard he was a pro back in the day - i guess he still is. No one knew he was showing up - but that he did and he smoked the course.
He hung out for a while, drank a beer and was waiting for one of his friends to finish. it was interesting to hear him talk.
Most notably from DW:
From the #3 guy and #1 guy I heard this:
Silly me - somehow i thought the strong guys were immune from all the stuff us normal people are. So it was shocking and comforting to hear these guys/gal are just as human as the rest of us.

Most notably from DW:
- that course was hard
- he got off a walked a few times (i almost fell out of my chair when i heard this)
- he was worked over
- he was suffering at some points
- he was glad to be finished
From the #3 guy and #1 guy I heard this:
- "I don't know how those guys on the rigid SS do it - i used every inch of travel and every gear i had."
- Ed: "how do you feel"
- Kenny J: "sucky!"

He's also the guy that eyed my rigid singlespeed at that point and asked me if I had started at 'noon' (he meant midnite of course), no doubt wondering how in the hell he had let me slip by and get ahead. In actuality I started about three hours earlier than him and he had caught up to me - pretty damn impressive rider that Kenny J!
Ed
hee-hee - that's funny you had him worried. ;)
